Registration
Your National Tax Number is how FBR tracks your tax record. For individuals, it's tied to your CNIC — there's no separate NTN card anymore; your CNIC number effectively becomes your NTN once you're registered on IRIS. Here's what the process actually involves, minus the parts nobody explains clearly the first time round.
Where registration usually stalls: when the mobile number or email being used is already linked to another CNIC in FBR's system — often because someone previously registered on a family member's behalf using a shared number. Use contact details that are genuinely, exclusively yours.
Straightforward individual registrations are often processed within the same day to a few days. Cases needing manual review — mismatched details, a previously registered number, incomplete address information — can take longer. Registering specifically to get onto the Active Taxpayers List before a property or vehicle transaction? Don't leave it for the week you need it — see our filer vs non-filer guide for why the timing matters that much.
This trips up more people than anything else on this list: having an NTN and being registered on IRIS does not automatically make you a filer. Filer status comes from actually submitting a return for the relevant tax year and having it processed onto the ATL. Plenty of people register, get their credentials, never file — and are confused later when non-filer withholding rates still apply to them.
Register early, use contact details that are genuinely yours, double-check your CNIC details match exactly, and actually file a return once you're on IRIS — registration by itself buys none of the filer benefits.
Log income and expenses from day one on IRIS, instead of reconstructing a year of records when filing season shows up.
